Do I need a referral from my doctor? No! Florida is a "direct access state" meaning clients are allowed to go directly to a physical therapist without a physician's referral first and receive treatment for 30 days. If the plan of care exceeds 30 days and the condition has not been assessed by a physician, then the PT must have a practitioner of record review and sign the plan. For Medicare Part B beneficiaries, a physician signature on the physical therapy plan of care is required within 30 days of the initial evaluation.
